Club President Jay Williams announced sadly on Monday that long-time member Jake Jolliff passed away the morning of Monday December 1, 2014. Fellow Rotarian and close friend Terry Hutchens wrote the following memorial for Jake. The members of the Rotary Club of North Raleigh will keep JJ and all of Jake’s family in our hearts.
When I think of Jake Jolliff several thoughts come to mind – my close friend, a happy man, and a committed Rotarian.
I’ve known Jake since I join the NRRC in November of 1992. He was the second person to greet me and welcome me into the club. Jack Andrews, his best friend and frequent accomplice, was the first. Jake and I became close friends, and I had the real honor of getting to know one of the finest people I’ve ever met.
I have many fond memories of him: as bartender with Jack in the hospitality suite at almost every Rotary Convention Martha and I attended (he and Jack even let us help); of him singing at the beginning of every weekly meeting (he was responsible for starting this part of our program, including purchasing song books for the Club); of going out fishing one day on our boat with Jack and Rich Lewis where he and I skillfully managed to be captain and first mate and let Jack and Rich fish.
The most lasting memory I have of Jake is that when we were around him we were always laughing. No matter where we were – weekly meetings, ball games, conventions, installations or holiday parties – there was always laughter.
Together we shared the pain of him losing Gwen, his first wife and high school sweetheart, and the joy of him finding JJ to share the second half of his life. But mostly I remember the weekly meetings of getting there early and helping set up the room and his determination to have everything just so-so. Even after he became ill and couldn’t help as much, he would always go around and make those necessary final corrections. When everything was set up, we would sit around the “SOB” (sneak out the back) table with coffee in hand and solve the world’s problems.
Jake has been a Rotarian since 1951. He was a member of the Asheville Club and was President of that club before moving to Raleigh. In 1985 he joined the NRRC and was always an active participant in Rotary projects. It’s not going to be the same around here without him.
Jake’s service will be held on Friday December 5th at 2:00 pm at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church located at 1520 Canterbury Rd Raleigh, NC 27608
