2016 Rotary Against Drugs Speech Contest

The Club held it’s annual Rotary Against Drugs Speech on Wednesday. This year’s theme was “What must be done to prevent drug and alcohol abuse in the US?”. Our competitors were from Sanderson High School’s debate team. They included Andrew Smith, Emma Fagnano, Lakieta Lockett and Mattie Pare. Andrew Smith won a very close competition (the top 3 were within 6 points of each other on a 500 point scale) and will compete on February 27th at the district competition. 2015 Rotary Against Drugs Speech Contest

Wednesday February 11, the Club hosted the annual Rotary Against Drugs Speech Contest. Four students from Sanderson High School participated and put on a great show. Maggie Lee and Tim Gillespie shared second runners up, Ashley Mercer won first runner up and Kate Crabtree won first place. North Raleigh Rotary’s Jason Potts chaired the competition and was left with very difficult choices scoring the essays with his committee. The speeches were all fantastic. The students were supported at the event by their parents and the Sanderson High Speech/English teacher.

Member Spotlight: Falling in Love with Rotary

It is always a special moment when two people find each other in a way that causes a lifetime commitment to each other. For Jake and J.J. Jolliff, that moment occurred thanks to their involvement with the Rotary Club of North Raleigh.  JJ joined the club in 2002 and Jake’s first wife passed away in 2003 after more than 50 years of marriage. They began to date in 2005 and married the following year.   Jake, who was honored at the Holiday party this month for his many years of service to the club, had an early experience with Rotary.
