President’s Corner-June 2014

We have reached the conclusion of a great year with less than a month before our new president, Jay Williams takes office. It has been an exciting year and I know the coming years will be just as wonderful. The 2014-15 Board has been elected and will be installed at our annual Installation Banquet on June 18th at the Carolina Country Club. What a day of celebration that will be? We have had a very productive year with membership, service projects, fundraising and giving to the Rotary Foundation. The board has worked tirelessly to ensure we had a great year

President’s Corner-May 2014

As I approach the last month and a half of my term as president of the Rotary Club of North Raleigh, I am amazed at how much we have accomplished together this year. Soon, there will be time to reminisce and look back, but today, we still have many opportunities ahead of us to serve and socialize. It is sorrowful for the club as we said ‘goodbye’ to a truly remarkable Rotarian and an even greater man…Jesse Schaudies. I know some of you attended his memorial service on Saturday afternoon at the Cypress and I appreciate you representing the club

President’s Corner-April 2014

Well, the last three months of my term as president of the Rotary Club of North Raleigh has started with a bang. It has been a great nine months and we are looking to finish the year strong. With a new member to be added in May and the scheduled events of April and May, it will be a whirlwind couple of months. The month began with the 71st District 7710 Convention in Asheville, North Carolina. It was last weekend and everyone in attendance had a wonderful experience. We enjoyed some great company, heard from some very special people and

A special week for Rotary and Interact Club

Last week was an incredible week for the members of the Rotary Club of North Raleigh and the Millbrook High School Interact Club…for separate and common reasons. On March 22nd, about 15 members and family members of the Rotary Club of North Raleigh gathered to plant trees/shrubs and then participated in a park cleanup at the Cedar Hills Rotary Park off Millbrook. This was the hands-on element for the club’s park beautification project…something members of this club have wanted done for many years. The project included installing a cement walkway from the parking lot to the picnic shelter and installing

President’s Corner, March 2014

It is hard to believe the Rotary year is almost over with less than four months remaining as president of this amazing club. I have enjoyed every minute, though it has been a challenge at times and very time-consuming. I know the club will be in good hands over the next few years as President-Elect Jay Williams and President-Nominee Chris Morden start preparing to fill these shoes. Speaking of which, the duo will be heading to Greensboro this weekend for President-Elect Training Seminar (PETS) and I am sure they will return with much passion for Rotary and this club’s future…and

Member Focus: Traveling Together, Serving Together: Terry Hutchens and Steven Nelson

Traveling together for a cause can be an interesting experience and its no difference when it comes to representing the Rotary Club of North Raleigh in Guatemala. This month, two gentlemen from this club travelled to Guatemala for a life-alliterating experience. Guatemala is one of the poorest and most illiterate nations in the Western Hemisphere. Traveling there is an experience in itself, but traveling there to visit rural schools is challenging.   Past President Terry Hutchens made his second trip to Guatemala in 2014. As the president when this project was brought to the club, he has been instrumental in

An Excerpt from the Guatemala Literacy Project Tour!

This video is just a sampling of the experiences of President Steven Nelson and Past President Terry Hutchens as they traveled to Guatemala last week. Filmed by Steven Nelson, it is not a perfect video and not perfectly edited. His limited knowledge of film and editing shows in this video. One of the great things that both Steven and Terry took from this week in Guatemala is the abject poverty experienced in the rural parts of this country. We visited the home of one of the scholarship students and ten people lived in a two room brick home with limited

Member Focus: Building Relationships around the World

One of the benefits of joining a local Rotary club is the ability to build personal and professional relationships with others in your area. But to join an organization that will allow you to develop relationships throughout the world, is a whole new experience.   New Rotarians Bobby Barnes and Mike Weinold are doing just that…building relationships here and abroad. Later this month, these gentlemen will pack their bags and fly to Santiago, Dominican Republic for an experience that is sure to change their lives…a Rotary Service Project. District 7710 will once again send 40 Rotarians to this poor island

What is the impact of Rotary on the world?

This is a very difficult answer to explain in such a few short paragraphs, but let’s discuss some of the ways it impacts the world. Rotary can be described as an international organization with projects throughout the world. Many of these projects are considered international projects, but in a way, they are all local projects, supported on an international level. This is the case since any project hoping to get a global matching grant needs to be a partnership with a host club, who will be instrumental in the sustainability of that project. In other words, if the Rotary Club

President’s Corner-January 2014

As we approach the last six months of my term as your president, I am amazed at all of the things we have accomplished over such a short period of time. From the donation to Operation Coming Home to the 20+ participants to the Stop Hunger Now food packing day to assisting one of our member’s with her companies food drive, it has been an amazing six months with many more great opportunities yet to come throughout the remainder of this Rotary year. Some of the wonderful projects and events that will be coming over the next month include two
