Clayton Rotarian’s Mission to Nepal After Earthquake

Margherita (Margo) Scott from the Clayton Morning Rotary Club presented the story of her journey to Nepal in the days following the horrible earthquake in April this year. Margo is a registered nurse of over 25 years’ experience, with a specialty in critical care and heart ultrasound. She volunteers for CardioStart International, a group that provides free cardiac surgery and medical training in under-served parts of the world. RTA’s Joe Milazzo talks about Priorities for Regional Transit

Joe Milazzo, Executive Director of the Regional Transportation Alliance (RTA), talked about transportation plans and options for Wake County. Joe has been in this role since the RTA’s inception in 2002. In addition to directing the RTA’s activities and operations, he represents the group to civic, government, business and media organizations throughout North Carolina’s Research Triangle region and beyond. There are options in the plan for bus and rail transit. The RTA is currently surveying potential ridership in order to understand the potential for the different plans. 1 in 4 NC Children at Risk for Hunger

Wednesday May 13, 2015 Jill Staton Bullard, Co-founder and CEO of the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, discussed the fight against hunger in NC. She explained that NC has a Childhood Food Insecurity rate of 26.1% (595,240 children) according to Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap study. In the 7 counties they serve alone, there were nearly 116,000 applications for children to receive free or reduced price lunch for the 2012-2013 school year. That’s 43% of all children in these public school systems that are at risk of hunger. Statewide, the number increases to 56% of children on free or reduced price

Casino Night in Local Publications

The Rotary Club of North Raleigh hosted it’s inaugural Casino Night Fundraiser earlier this year in March. The event was a major success and has garnered attention in the May issue of Walter Magazine and the June issue of Midtown Magazine. Maria will be attending Wake Technical College. The Alex Wilson Scholarship was created in 1980 to honor students who embodies the Rotary Four way test. Alex was a founding member of our club and served as president. This year, with the blessing of Mrs. Wilson and her estate, we increased the scholarship to $1,000 per school.
