Can You Read This? Many in the World Cannot!

Originally posted by Steven Nelson on Mar 10, 2015 On the Rotary International calendar, March is Literacy Month. Clubs bring awareness to literacy challenges through many different means; projects, events, donations. North Raleigh Rotary Club’s Immediate Past President Steven Nelson wrote this piece about literacy and the Guatemala Literacy Project. You are currently enjoying something that an estimated 774 million adults and 123 million children of the world cannot enjoy…reading (According to International Literacy Day 2013). The ability to read and to comprehend the written word is taken for granted by so many people, but the facts are astounding. Imagine

President’s Corner-April 2014

Well, the last three months of my term as president of the Rotary Club of North Raleigh has started with a bang. It has been a great nine months and we are looking to finish the year strong. With a new member to be added in May and the scheduled events of April and May, it will be a whirlwind couple of months. The month began with the 71st District 7710 Convention in Asheville, North Carolina. It was last weekend and everyone in attendance had a wonderful experience. We enjoyed some great company, heard from some very special people and

President’s Corner, March 2014

It is hard to believe the Rotary year is almost over with less than four months remaining as president of this amazing club. I have enjoyed every minute, though it has been a challenge at times and very time-consuming. I know the club will be in good hands over the next few years as President-Elect Jay Williams and President-Nominee Chris Morden start preparing to fill these shoes. Speaking of which, the duo will be heading to Greensboro this weekend for President-Elect Training Seminar (PETS) and I am sure they will return with much passion for Rotary and this club’s future…and

Member Focus: Traveling Together, Serving Together: Terry Hutchens and Steven Nelson

Traveling together for a cause can be an interesting experience and its no difference when it comes to representing the Rotary Club of North Raleigh in Guatemala. This month, two gentlemen from this club travelled to Guatemala for a life-alliterating experience. Guatemala is one of the poorest and most illiterate nations in the Western Hemisphere. Traveling there is an experience in itself, but traveling there to visit rural schools is challenging.   Past President Terry Hutchens made his second trip to Guatemala in 2014. As the president when this project was brought to the club, he has been instrumental in

An Excerpt from the Guatemala Literacy Project Tour!

This video is just a sampling of the experiences of President Steven Nelson and Past President Terry Hutchens as they traveled to Guatemala last week. Filmed by Steven Nelson, it is not a perfect video and not perfectly edited. His limited knowledge of film and editing shows in this video. One of the great things that both Steven and Terry took from this week in Guatemala is the abject poverty experienced in the rural parts of this country. We visited the home of one of the scholarship students and ten people lived in a two room brick home with limited

President’s Corner-January 2014

As we approach the last six months of my term as your president, I am amazed at all of the things we have accomplished over such a short period of time. From the donation to Operation Coming Home to the 20+ participants to the Stop Hunger Now food packing day to assisting one of our member’s with her companies food drive, it has been an amazing six months with many more great opportunities yet to come throughout the remainder of this Rotary year. Some of the wonderful projects and events that will be coming over the next month include two
