The club meeting on April 8th was our last Club Assembly for the Rotary Year. This gave us a chance to review some of our recent activity as a club and look forward to some upcoming activities over the next few months.
President Jay Williams spoke about the upcoming District Conference on April 24th – 26th in New Bern, NC. Dee Dee Heard came to the podium to discuss our club dinner the Friday night of District Conference. We have over 20 North Raleigh Rotarians and spouses signed up already and it’s not too late if you want to come! Go to the District website and sign up today! Other upcoming activities include our Club Picnic on Wednesday April 29th at Cedar Hills Park (we won’t meet at Sertoma that day), a volunteer opportunity at the Miracle League of the Triangle on Saturday May 2nd from 12 – 3pm, and our spring roadside cleanup on Saturday May 16th. Signup sheets will go around starting next week for the Miracle League of the Triangle and in a few weeks for the road side clean up.
Steven Nelson came to the podium next to give the club an update from the 50th anniversary planning committee. The North Raleigh Rotary Club turns celebrates it’s 50th anniversary in June 2017 and we are already working on a plan to help us celebrate this important achievement. The biggest component of our plan is to do 1-2 large projects that year that total $50,000 to represent our 50 years as a club. The club is looking for ideas on how to raise this $50,000 as well as looking for organizations to support with these projects. Every club member is encouraged to submit the name of an organization that you think could be a worthy partner for our club. We will then send out invitations to these organizations asking them what they need from us and how they would use Rotary funds in an ongoing project that will support the people in our community and bring recognition to our club. There is also a History committee that is looking for ideas, memorabilia, old photos – anything from the history of our club. Please see Steven Nelson or Jay Williams to contribute!
Lastly, Scott Tarkenton came to the podium to report the final results to the club from our first annual Casino Night Fundraiser. Scott was proudly able to report that this year’s fundraiser raised $13,124 for our club! The Casino Night Planning Committee started meeting in September 2014 with a goal of raising between $7,000 and $8,000 for our club. Due to the hard work of the committee and the dedicated members of our club, we were able to nearly double that amount. Scott specifically thanked the members of the committee: Jay Williams, Chris Morden, Mike Wienold, Ed Smallwood, Adam Gottsegen, and Nina O’Neal, Gene Hirsch for taking photos the night of the event, Linda Brooks for PR after the event, and Dee Dee Heard and Ryan Kane for volunteering the night of the event. Scott also announced the date of next year’s Casino Night, Saturday April 9th. Mark your calendars now as the 2nd year promises to be even more fun than the first!
