Speaker Scott McElhaney of 919 MAGAZINE talked to the club about the current conditions of print and broadcast news. Scott spoke about the decline in newspaper circulation due to lowered income from advertising. During the housing bust, many of the top advertisers went away (many were real estate companies) leaving a huge revenue gap for print media to fill. The other issue is quality of journalism. With the need for immediate news in high demand, many outlets lower their journalistic standards to meet the real time needs. Additionally, editors and photographers were the most severely cut from publishing during the recession leaving it up to writers to do quality control on their own work.
