Another month has flown by and here we are less than a month before Christmas. November was another busy month for the Rotary Club of North Raleigh! We started the month by hosting the team of Brazilians in our District. We had a District wide dinner honoring them at the NC State University Club. Our own Steven Nelson also helped organize a Carolina Hurricanes game for everyone to attend with them. I know the experience really had an impact on the members that hosted them and got to interact with them. The experience also had a huge impact on the Brazilians themselves as they gained a ton of knowledge about our culture and our experiences helping people with Alzheimer’s and other dementia disorders.
Speaking of Alzheimer’s, our club hosted an Alzheimer’s Event in November with the Wakefield Rotary Club at the Abbotswood retirement community in North Raleigh. At least 20 Rotarians, the 15 Brazilians, and 5 Interact Club members volunteered to play Bingo with the residents, serve ice cream, and help with entertainment for the residents of the community. North Raleigh Rotarian and Executive Director of Abbotswood, Matt Towler, helped organize the event and coordinate a $500 donation to the CART fund by Abbotswood’s parent company Kisco Senior Living. I got a ton of compliments about the event from the residents and the Rotarians who volunteered. I also learned that I don’t have much of a future as a Bingo caller! Those folks are pros and aren’t afraid to let you know if you don’t do it right!
The month ended with a wonderful Family day program at the club as our very own Mike Aoun shared his story about his family and his experiences growing up in Lebanon and moving to the U.S. in 1985. It was an inspirational story and really set the tone for a great Thanksgiving break. We have a lot to look forward to in December including our annual Christmas Party on December 17th at the Carolina Country Club. It promises to be a wonderful evening of food, fun, and fellowship.
On a somber note, I had to give sad news to the club for the 2nd time this year as Jake Jolliff passed away this week. Jake was a great Rotarian, a Past President, and someone I looked forward to seeing every week. Please keep JJ and their entire family in your prayers during this holiday season.
Thank you for all that you do for our club and I look forward to a great holiday season with you all!
