May is Youth Service Month on the Rotary calendar. The Rotary Club of North Raleigh celebrated Youth Service on Wednesday by hosting a Youth Services Assembly, showcasing our 2016 youth programs. Jason Potts, RCNR Youth Services Director, thanked the members who have chaired the programs this year and introduced local youth who have benefited from them.
Alex Wilson Awards: The club recognized two Alex Wilson Awards recipients at the assembly. Sanderson High School senior Noah Anderson received a $1000 Alex Wilson scholarship. Noah is a recognized leader and achiever at Sanderson and well regarded by Sanderson faculty. Noah plans to attend UNC at Pembroke. Sammy Brinkley of Millbrook High School also received a $1000 scholarship. His counselor, Jenny Cahoon, described him as a hard working and talented young man.
Millbrook Interact President: Elise Lutz is the President of our Interact Club at Millbrook High School. Elise overcame great challenges to become the leader that she is. She was born in China and suffered severe burn injuries as a young child. She grew up in an orphanage after being abandoned by her parents. At age 9 she was adopted by a Raleigh, NC family that helped show her she could accomplish anything. The club awarded her a $1000 scholarship for her excellence in running the Interact club and her contributions to the community.
Rotary Youth Exchange Student: Ms. Allison Becker, a senior at Cardinal Gibbons High School, is our club’s outgoing Rotary Exchange student. In August, she will be departing for a year studying abroad in Argentina. Allison will be participating in what is known as a ‘gap year’ program. She will be attending a high school as a senior in Argentina, in between graduating this June and her start of college.
RYLA: Jason talked about our RYLA program this year. Unfortunately none of the RYLA participants were able to attend the assembly. Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a leadership program coordinated by Rotary Clubs around the globe. Each year, thousands of young people participate in this program. High school students, usually in their junior year, are sponsored by Rotary Clubs to attend the event run by the district committee.
