2016 Rotary Against Drugs Speech Contest

The Club held it’s annual Rotary Against Drugs Speech on Wednesday. This year’s theme was “What must be done to prevent drug and alcohol abuse in the US?”. Our competitors were from Sanderson High School’s debate team. They included Andrew Smith, Emma Fagnano, Lakieta Lockett and Mattie Pare. Andrew Smith won a very close competition (the top 3 were within 6 points of each other on a 500 point scale) and will compete on February 27th at the district competition. Ian works with NC State University’s Dairy Records Management Systems in Garner (part of NC State) that processes the management and marketing information for over 2 million cows in the US. Former Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker

Guest speaker Former mayor of Raleigh Charles Meeker visited the club Wednesday February 3, 2016. Mayor Meeker talked about the challenges he faced while in office between 2001 and 2011. Cleaning the city’s water supply, renovating the downtown area, building the convention center all occurred under his watch. He was elected in 2001 and reelected for a fifth consecutive two-year term in 2009. His fifth term tied him with Avery Upchurch as Raleigh’s longest-serving mayor.
